Mark Deeks is a qualified piano teacher and has the Dip(ABRSM) in Piano Teaching, Grade 8 Piano, as well as a Grade 8 theory qualification and a BA(Hons) in Popular Music Studies from the University of Leeds.
Most importantly there is no pressure to study for piano qualifications if you don’t want to. However, if you are interested, you can prepare for examinations in both ABRSM and London College of Music (each offer both classical and jazz grades), or alternatively the RockSchool Popular Piano grades from Trinity College London.
The short answer is whilst this would be great, no! Electric pianos are absolutely fine, and provide an alternative that is often both cheaper and requires less space in the home. The most important thing is that whatever instrument you choose has touch-sensitive keys (meaning that they replicate the feature of an acoustic piano in that the harder they are pressed, the louder the sound), as without it, the basics of technique development is very difficult. The very cheapest models sometimes don’t offer this feature so it is worth checking before you buy. If you would like some recommendations or a professional piano teacher opinion before you buy a particular model, then please feel free to Contact Music Newcastle.
